Brig. Gen. Ebrahim Jabbari, an adviser to the IRGC, declared that "the Strait of Hormuz is closed" and said any ship passing through would be set on fire, AP reported. On 2 March The Guardian reported that Iran had warned tankers within hours of the first strikes that no ship would be allowed through, but had not officially confirmed a closure, while tankers piled up on both sides of the strait. About a fifth of the world's traded oil passes through the strait.
