The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran on 28 February. Al Jazeera reported missiles striking University Street and the Jomhouri area of Tehran and explosions near the offices of the supreme leader, with attacks reported in other provinces; CNN reported strikes in several other cities. President Donald Trump said the aim was "eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime", and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes would remove an "existential threat". Iran's foreign ministry said military, defence and civilian sites were hit. Oman had recently mediated US-Iran talks, CNN noted.
