CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said Iran opened fire on US warships and vessels on the first day of the operation and that US helicopters sank six Iranian small boats, AFP and Maritime Executive reported. Iranian media said missiles were fired at a US warship; CENTCOM said no US Navy ship had been struck. Cooper declined to say whether the exchange ended the 8 April ceasefire. Iran denied losing military boats; Iranian state media said the boats hit were civilian craft carrying goods and passengers and that five people were killed, Al Jazeera reported. Earlier that day Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya command warned that foreign forces, especially the US military, would be targeted if they approached or entered the strait.
