The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed on 23 October an oil spill from a supertanker in the Gulf that caused a strong fuel smell in Dubai and the northern emirates, and Umm Al Quwain closed its beaches, The National reported. The ministry did not name the vessel; The National said maritime agencies identified it as the Gem No.2, struck in a suspected Iranian drone attack on 9 to 10 October, and experts told Reuters the same. Ras Al Khaimah closed all beaches on 24 October, and Copernicus satellite images dated 24 October showed the slick widening toward the Umm Al Quwain shore.
