Iran's Assembly of Experts announced on state television, around midnight Tehran time, that it had chosen Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ali Khamenei, as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic by what it called a decisive vote. Reports citing the New York Times said the assembly had met days earlier but delayed the announcement over security fears. President Trump had said on 6 March that such a choice would be unacceptable.
