A strike destroyed the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' elementary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, on 28 February. Iranian state media, citing the local prosecutor, put the toll at 165 killed and 96 injured by 1 March; UNESCO, citing reports of around 150 dead, called it a grave violation of humanitarian law. The Israeli military said it was not aware of strikes in the area and the US military said it was looking into the reports; Human Rights Watch later said the strike should be investigated as a war crime. On 12 March Al Jazeera relayed a New York Times report, quoting US officials, that a US Tomahawk missile struck the school because of a targeting mistake. Independent outlets said they could not reach the site or verify the toll.
