Drewry: World Container Index at $2,172 per 40ft box, up 2%, as Hormuz disruption lifts fuel surcharges

Reportedon one origin only: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.

Drewry's World Container Index composite stood at $2,172 per 40ft container in the assessment for 19 March 2026. Drewry put Shanghai to Rotterdam at $2,478, Shanghai to Genoa at $3,108 and Shanghai to Los Angeles at $2,591 per 40ft. Drewry said the composite rose 2% on the week, its third straight rise, and linked the trend to disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after US and Israeli strikes on Iran. It reported that CMA CGM raised its emergency fuel surcharge from $150 to $265 per TEU from 16 March, and that OOCL, COSCO and Maersk added temporary emergency bunker surcharges. Against Drewry's 5 October 2023 assessment of $1,389.5, the composite was up 56% (our calculation from Drewry's figures). The war hit container rates mainly through fuel costs and Gulf port access rather than through main-lane capacity.
