24 May 2026 in brief

Lebanon's state news agency reported people killed in Israeli strikes on several southern towns, including a paramedic in Arab Salim, and Al Jazeera put the toll at six or more; the health ministry put the toll since early March at 3,151 killed and 9,571 wounded. [1][2][3] Lebanese Civil Defence said a strike destroyed its regional facility in Nabatieh, and a WHO Lebanon health brief recorded 123 deaths among health workers since 2 March. [1][2] Iran's military said it shot down an Israeli-made surveillance drone over Hormozgan province, a claim the Israeli military disputed by saying it was not aware of any such incident. [1] President Pezeshkian said no deal would be made without the Supreme Leader's permission, Netanyahu said any final agreement must dismantle Iran's enrichment sites, and Rubio said significant progress had been made on Hormuz. Brent crude fell more than 5 percent as markets reacted to Trump's deal remarks, and Bahraini state media said nine people were jailed for life for acts carried out with the IRGC. [1][2]
