Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas was a very important condition for a settlement. Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said Moscow wanted a diplomatic outcome but would pursue its goals on the battlefield until then.
