Blast at Russian-run Olenivka prison kills dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war; sides blame each other
Disputedon credible origins that conflict: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.
An explosion and fire destroyed a barracks holding Ukrainian prisoners of war, most of them surrendered Azovstal defenders, at a Russian-controlled detention site in Olenivka, Donetsk oblast, on 29 July. Russia's defence ministry said 40 prisoners were killed and 75 wounded and blamed a Ukrainian HIMARS strike; separatist officials later gave 53 dead. Ukraine's military denied firing on the site and accused Russia of staging the blast. The ICRC asked for access but, per VOA, had not been granted it by 7 August; a VOA fact check citing satellite imagery and experts judged the HIMARS claim likely false.
