Indirect US-Iran technical talks held in Doha; Iran says a channel to settle disputes will be set up
Reportedon one origin only: 1 distinct origin, 0 tied to no party.
Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan held separate meetings in Doha with US and Iranian negotiators on 1 July, and Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said the talks made 'positive progress', with the next meeting to follow the funeral of Iran's former supreme leader, Al Jazeera reported. Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the sides agreed to set up a communication channel to resolve disputes and that part of $6bn in frozen Iranian funds would buy goods Iran needs. Qatar's emir met US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner the same day; Iran's top negotiators did not attend. The talks followed a week of exchanges of fire over shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz since the 17 June memorandum.
