Ukraine's Khortytsia operational group said higher command had authorised units to leave Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast to preserve personnel and equipment, because Russian flanking attacks with reserves created a threat of encirclement. The Ukrainian mapping project DeepState had reported on 1 October that Russian troops occupied the town and were posting photos of flags there. The Institute for the Study of War assessed that the town was not a major logistics hub. Vuhledar had held out against repeated Russian assaults since 2022.
