Russia launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine from the north, east and south
Confirmedon an admission by the acting party plus an independent origin: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.
Russian forces attacked Ukraine by land, air and sea before dawn, after President Vladimir Putin announced what he called a special military operation in a televised address. Strikes and ground advances were reported from Belarus towards Kyiv, from Russia towards Kharkiv and the east, and from Crimea towards the south. NPR reported Putin justified the attack by saying Russia sought the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine. The attack followed Russia's recognition of the self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk republics on 21 February.
