Russia handed over 1,000 bodies that it said belonged to Ukrainian soldiers, and Ukraine returned the bodies of 38 Russian servicemen, in the first repatriation of 2026. Ukraine's prisoner-of-war coordination headquarters confirmed the exchange and thanked the Red Cross; the figures came from Russian lawmaker Shamsail Saraliyev. Ukrainian forensic experts are to identify the remains. In 2025 the two sides carried out 14 such exchanges, returning 14,480 bodies to Ukraine and 391 to Russia.
