US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, sitting in separate rooms while Qatari mediators carried messages, according to Witkoff's account on X and a Channel 12 report. Trump said the session lasted three hours and went very well, adding that Iran faced potential greatness or obliteration. Iranian state media said Araghchi set out Iran's conditions for reopening the strait: an immediate lift of the US naval blockade, release of frozen assets and an end to the war on all fronts. Channel 12 reported that the US dismissed Iran's offer to reopen the strait, saying Tehran does not control it.
