President Vladimir Putin told his defence minister and chief of the General Staff to move Russia's deterrent forces, which include nuclear weapons, onto a special mode of combat duty. He cited what he called aggressive statements by NATO countries and Western financial sanctions. It was not immediately clear what practical change the order made. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported the next day that the forces had begun combat duty with reinforced staff.
