Drones from Iraq strike Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina regions; Riyadh shuts the line as a precaution

Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said its East-West crude pipeline was temporarily shut down after several attacks in the Riyadh and Medina regions, and an energy official told SPA the attacks caused some injuries. The Saudi foreign ministry said the drones originated in Iraq without naming who launched them. Reuters said satellite imagery it verified showed smoke near the pipeline on 11 September. Iraq's prime minister ordered an investigation, and Iraq welcomed Riyadh's decision not to retaliate for now. The energy ministry statement as carried by agencies, and AP, date the attacks and shutdown to Thursday, 10 September, while AFP and Reuters place them on Friday, 11 September; the closure was announced late on 11 September. A Planet Labs image dated 11 September showed a fire-damaged site southeast of Medina on the pipeline route; the Islamic Resistance in Iraq denied striking the pipeline. Traders told Reuters on 13 September that Saudi export stocks could run out within days without the line, risking up to 4% of global supply, and repair estimates ranged up to five to six weeks; two regional officials told AP on 14 September that the line, about 1,200 km long with capacity of up to 7 million barrels a day, would be largely offline for three to five weeks. The line, carrying crude from the east coast to the Red Sea, has been Saudi Arabia's main route around the closed Strait of Hormuz.
