Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Ukrainian forces withdrew from Avdiivka in Donetsk region to more secure positions to avoid encirclement and preserve soldiers' lives. Russia's defence ministry claimed control of the town and about 32 square kilometres, and President Putin congratulated the troops; each side said the other suffered heavy losses without giving its own. President Zelensky blamed a shortage of weapons and the stalled US aid.
