CENTCOM says it destroyed five Iranian tankers after two IRGC missile attempts on a US warship; Rubio warns of more

US Central Command said on 8 September that it destroyed five Iranian tankers it described as part of a shadow fleet, naming the Kaviz, Charminar, Horizon 1 and Riesco in the Gulf of Oman and the Derya near Kharg Island, after directing crews to abandon ship, in response to the IRGC twice targeting a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles; it said the warship evaded the attacks and no American personnel were harmed. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in Colombia that Iran would lose tankers every time it tried to hit US naval ships. The IRGC said it then attacked two US vessels and eight oil tankers trying to cross what it called a prohibited area of the strait, a claim not independently confirmed.
