Shortly after midnight on New Year's Day a strike hit a vocational school used as quarters for Russian troops in Makiivka, in the Russian-occupied part of Donetsk oblast. Russia's defence ministry first gave 63 dead and on 4 January raised it to 89, with Lieutenant General Sergey Sevryukov blaming soldiers' unauthorised use of mobile phones. Ukraine's military claimed about 400 Russian soldiers were killed, a figure that was not independently verified. It was one of the largest single losses Moscow has acknowledged.
