UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Damascus on 25 July, met President Ahmed al-Sharaa and said at a news conference that violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity 'must cease' and that the Golan Heights are Syrian territory, Al Jazeera reported. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani called for Israeli forces to withdraw from the UN-patrolled buffer zone. Israel took the buffer zone after Assad's fall in December 2024 and says it will keep a security zone in southern Syria.
