Israel carried out more than 100 air strikes across Lebanon on 8 April, hitting dense commercial and residential areas of central Beirut and its southern suburbs, the south and the Bekaa, Lebanese officials said, Al Jazeera reported; Lebanon's civil defence counted at least 254 killed and 1,165 wounded that day, and a strike on a funeral in Shmestar killed at least 20. Lebanon's government later put the day's toll at 303, Haaretz reported. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the army hit hundreds of Hezbollah fighters at command centres; the army said most targets were in civilian areas and it took steps to reduce harm. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Israel killed defenceless civilians and Speaker Nabih Berri called it a war crime.
