Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesman for Ukraine's eastern group of forces, told Suspilne that troops had pulled out of Soledar to preserve lives after accomplishing their main task, and said there was no encirclement. It was Kyiv's first confirmation that Russian forces held the town, almost two weeks after Russia's defence ministry claimed it. Ukrainian drone commander Robert Brovdi had said on 16 January that Russian units had taken the last industrial area on the town's western edge.
