Donald Trump said after a call of nearly two and a half hours with Vladimir Putin on 16 October that the two would meet in Budapest and that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would first meet senior Russian officials. Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin told Trump that Tomahawk missiles for Ukraine would not change the battlefield but would seriously harm US-Russia relations. On 21 October a White House official said there were no plans for a meeting in the immediate future, and Trump later said he wanted to avoid a wasted meeting.
