Vladimir Putin said in late October that Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk and Kupiansk were encircled and offered a pause of a few hours so journalists could visit. Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said there was no encirclement or blockade and that reinforcements were being sent to Pokrovsk, where Ukraine's military said about 11,000 Russian troops were concentrated. Russia's defence ministry said on 1 November it had destroyed a Ukrainian special forces group landed by helicopter near Pokrovsk, which Ukraine denied.
