Large explosions hit the Saky military air base on Crimea's west coast on 9 August. Russia's defence ministry said aviation munitions had detonated, that there was no attack and no aircraft were damaged; Crimean officials reported one civilian killed. Satellite images published by Al Jazeera, citing Planet Labs, showed destroyed jets, and Ukraine's air force said nine aircraft were destroyed. Kyiv denied involvement at the time, but in September Ukraine's military chief claimed a series of strikes on Crimean air bases, including Saky.
