Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on 3 August a fact-finding mission into the 29 July incident at Olenivka, after requests from both Ukraine and Russia, and on 22 August named retired Brazilian general Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz to lead it. Guterres said the mission needed safe and unfettered access to the site, people and evidence. The UN disbanded the mission on 5 January 2023, saying the conditions for deployment were absent.
