Putin orders a 36-hour Orthodox Christmas ceasefire; Kyiv rejects it
Confirmedon an admission by the acting party plus an independent origin: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.
President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian forces to cease fire along the whole front from noon on 6 January to midnight on 7 January, after a call for a Christmas truce from Patriarch Kirill. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia wanted the pause as cover to halt Ukrainian advances in Donbas and bring in equipment, and adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said a truce was possible only if Russia left occupied territory. It was the first ceasefire order of the full-scale war and was not agreed by Ukraine.
