Russian forces launch a large assault to encircle Avdiivka

Reportedon one origin only: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.

Russian forces stepped up attacks around Avdiivka, an industrial town just north of Donetsk city, with artillery and air strikes, according to Ukrainian officials. Vitaliy Barabash, head of the town's military administration, said the situation had worsened rapidly as Russian forces tried to besiege it; presidential aide Andriy Yermak said it was under massive attack. AFP reported that Russian forces held ground to the north, east and south, and that about 2,000 of 31,000 pre-war residents remained. The offensive became the main Russian effort of the autumn and winter.
