Russian forces retook several villages north and east of the Ukrainian-held town of Sudzha in Russia's Kursk region, including Staraya Sorochina, Novaya Sorochina and Malaya Loknya, the Guardian reported on 9 March, and Russia said its forces were close to encircling Ukrainian troops there. A Ukrainian soldier told the Guardian the road from the enclave to Sumy was still open but under constant drone attack. Ukraine had held the area since August 2024 as a potential bargaining chip.
