Lebanese and Israeli officials meeting at the US embassy in Rome agreed a shortlist of countries that could contribute troops to verify Hezbollah's disarmament, with the United States to choose from it, a Lebanese official told Reuters. The talks implement the 26 June deal linking a gradual Israeli withdrawal to disarmament; Hezbollah is not a party and has refused to give up its weapons. No agreement was reached on the next area of Israeli withdrawal, and a State Department spokesperson called the talks productive. Reuters noted more than a million Lebanese were displaced in the war.
