Darya Dugina, a commentator and daughter of nationalist writer Alexander Dugin, was killed when a bomb exploded in her car outside Moscow on 20 August. On 22 August the FSB said Ukrainian special services organised the killing and named a Ukrainian woman as the perpetrator; Kyiv denied involvement. In October the New York Times reported that US intelligence believed parts of the Ukrainian government had authorised the attack, which Ukraine again denied.
