Civilians who had sheltered for weeks in the bunkers of the Azovstal steel plant began leaving on 1 May in a convoy coordinated by the UN and the ICRC, and 101 people from the plant and other parts of Mariupol reached Zaporizhzhia, the UN said. UN official Osnat Lubrani said evacuees told heartbreaking stories of the hell they went through. Further operations followed in the next week.
