Russian warships attacked Ukraine's outpost on Snake Island in the north-western Black Sea after the garrison refused a demand to surrender, in a radio exchange that was widely circulated. President Volodymyr Zelensky initially said the 13 border guards had been killed. On 28 February Ukraine's navy said the guards were alive and held by Russia. The island lies on the sea approaches to Odesa and the Danube.
