Russia's defence ministry said its Tsentr group of forces had taken the village of Memryk, about 20 km from Pokrovsk, AFP reported. Pokrovsk, a road junction that supplies Ukrainian troops along the eastern front, had about 60,000 residents before the assault, and more than half had fled as fighting neared, the report said. Russia had claimed dozens of villages on the approach to the city in the preceding months.
