US president Donald Trump said on 12 February that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin and that they had agreed to begin negotiations on a ceasefire, the Guardian reported. Trump later told reporters it was unlikely Ukraine would regain much territory and that he was "OK" with Ukraine not joining Nato. The same day defence secretary Pete Hegseth told allies in Brussels that a return to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders was unrealistic. Kyiv and European governments had not been part of the call.
