During the overnight attack of 8 to 9 January, Russia fired an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Lviv area in western Ukraine. Russia's defence ministry called it retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attempt on a Putin residence, which Kyiv has denied. Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the target was critical infrastructure, and Ukraine's military said the missile was launched from the Kapustin Yar range in Astrakhan Oblast.
