12 March 2026 in brief

An Israeli strike on Irkey in south Lebanon killed four girls and five relatives, AFP reported, and Israel ordered southern residents to move north of the Zahrani River as Lebanon's government said some 800,000 had registered as displaced. [1][2] HRANA relayed a UNHCR estimate of about 3.2 million people temporarily displaced inside Iran, and Israel's health ministry said 179 people were injured in 24 hours of Iranian fire. [1][2] A drone strike on a base near Erbil killed a French soldier, French officials said, and CENTCOM said all six crew died when a US KC-135 tanker crashed in western Iraq, not due to hostile fire, though Iraqi armed groups claimed to have downed it. [1][2] An Iranian attack set oil tanks ablaze near Bahrain International Airport, AP reported, and Brent rose back above $100 after the tanker attacks off Basra. [1][2] In his first statement as supreme leader, read on state television, Mojtaba Khamenei said the lever of blocking the Strait of Hormuz must continue to be used, while President Pezeshkian set out conditions for ending the war.
