17 March 2026 in brief

Lebanese authorities said more than one million people had registered as displaced as Israel expanded ground operations in the south. [1] Israel said it killed Iran's security chief Ali Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani, and Tehran confirmed Larijani's death. [1] An air strike on a house in Baghdad's Jadriya district killed four people, a security source told Al Jazeera, as drones and rockets targeted the US embassy, and missile debris killed a Pakistani man in Abu Dhabi, its media office said. [1][2] A drone attack set off a fire in Fujairah's oil industry zone, and EnterpriseAM reported Hormuz war-risk quotes of 7.5% to 10% of hull value for higher-risk ships. [1][2] Kuwait said it arrested 16 people over an alleged Hezbollah-linked sabotage plot, which Hezbollah denied, and US counterterrorism chief Joe Kent resigned in protest at the war. [1][2]
