24 April 2026 in brief

Lebanon's health ministry said Israeli strikes killed six people in southern villages, putting its toll since 2 March at 2,491, while the IDF said it killed six Hezbollah members in Bint Jbeil, and AFP said it was unclear whether the counts overlapped. [1][2] UNIFIL said a second Indonesian peacekeeper died of wounds from a 29 March blast at his base, and a UN source told AFP that investigations indicated the fire came from an Israeli tank, which the IDF said it was investigating. [1] Kuwait's defence ministry said two drones launched from Iraq damaged two northern border posts, with no casualties. [1] Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US blockade of Iranian ports was going global, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine said Iran had attacked five ships in the strait and seized two, and the US Treasury sanctioned the Chinese refiner Hengli and about 40 shipping firms and vessels over Iranian oil. [1][2] The UN human rights office said Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Hezbollah rocket fire into Israel may amount to serious violations of international humanitarian law. [1]
