28 April 2026 in brief

Two successive Israeli strikes on a building in Majdal Zoun killed five people, including three civil defence rescuers who had come to help the wounded, Lebanon's health ministry said, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called it a war crime. [1] The ministry said other Israeli strikes on the south killed four people and wounded 51, and put its toll since 2 March at 2,534 killed. [1] The UAE said it would leave OPEC on 1 May while most of its oil exports were blocked by Iran's restrictions on Hormuz, and Yemen's Houthis warned they could shut the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. [1][2] Gulf leaders met in Jeddah for the first time since the war began and said the strait must reopen, and UN Secretary-General Guterres warned the impasse risked the worst supply chain disruption since COVID-19. [1][2] Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the blockade was pushing Iran's oil storage at Kharg Island near capacity, and Trump said Iran was in a state of collapse.
