21 July 2026 in brief

WHO recorded an attack affecting health transport, health workers and health supplies in Zaoutar, in south Lebanon. [1] CENTCOM said a five-hour round of US strikes ended overnight, as Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Abbas and state broadcaster IRIB said locations near Shiraz were attacked. [1] The IRGC claimed strikes on US air defences and radars in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, none of which was independently confirmed in the reports seen. [1] Two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to Asia turned back in the Red Sea after the Houthi blockade declaration, Al Jazeera reported. [1] US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told senators the war had cost the military $37.5bn, and Trump met Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun as the Lebanese army deployed to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, the first of three 'pilot zone' villages.
