The Lebanese army deployed troops to Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh on 21 July, one of three 'pilot zone' villages with Froun and Srifa whose security it is taking over under a US-overseen framework with Israel, Al Jazeera reported. The US State Department announced the step on 20 July, and Israel said its military was coordinating; the army told residents not to return until the situation stabilised. Al Jazeera reported that the three towns had not been under Israeli control, and Israeli officials say troops will stay in a zone about 10 km deep while Hezbollah is armed. Hezbollah rejects the framework, agreed on 26 June, which sets no withdrawal date.
