Wagner forces took control of military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, described by Al Jazeera as a key southern military base, and a column drove north into Lipetsk oblast, about 450 km from Moscow, the Kyiv Independent reported. Putin called the rebellion betrayal and treason and promised punishment. That evening Prigozhin said he would turn back to avoid bloodshed, about 200 km from Moscow by his account, after talks with Belarus's Alexander Lukashenko; under the deal the Kremlin said the case against him would be dropped and he would go to Belarus, and Wagner fighters could sign defence ministry contracts. Prigozhin later said about 30 Wagner fighters were killed in strikes on the column, and Wagner forces reportedly shot down aircraft, killing pilots.
