Wagner claims eastern Bakhmut as defenders are pushed west of the Bakhmutka river
Confirmedon verified, dated visual or sensor evidence: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party, with visual or sensor evidence.
Prigozhin said on 8 March that Wagner controlled about half of Bakhmut and had practically surrounded it; Al Jazeera reported that geolocated footage supported his claim that Ukrainian defenders had been pushed to the west bank of the Bakhmutka river. The Institute for the Study of War called the Ukrainian defence strategically sound as it consumed Russian manpower. Ukrainian security council secretary Oleksiy Danilov claimed seven Russians died for every Ukrainian in Bakhmut, which could not be verified. The White House had estimated Wagner losses at about 30,000 casualties, including about 9,000 dead.
