US strikes military sites across southern Iran in a new overnight wave; Iranian media report hits from Bandar Abbas to Semnan

US Central Command said strikes completed early on 16 July hit command centres, air defence sites, missile and drone capabilities and coastal surveillance facilities to 'further degrade Iran's ability to threaten innocent mariners' in the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reported. Iranian media reported attacks in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Sirik, Chabahar, Konarak, Rask, Khondab, Khorramabad and Semnan, and air defences were activated around Tehran, Pakdasht and Parchin. The Iranian military said it downed a US MQ-9 drone over Andimeshk. The wave followed a roughly 90-minute US bombardment of coastal defence and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island late on 15 July; the US says the campaign answers Iranian attacks on commercial ships after the interim memorandum broke down.
