The governing council of the International Maritime Organization on 10 July 'strongly condemned' Iran's creation of an entity purporting to control traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and called on member states not to recognise Iran's claim of sovereignty over the strait or decisions to close or obstruct it, Al Jazeera reported. The IRGC navy had said on 9 July that ships must use designated routes and foreigners would have 'no share' in managing the strait. Europe was meanwhile studying proposals for non-compulsory navigation fees backed by the IMO, the Guardian reported.
