10 July 2026 in brief

Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon killed one person and wounded three, Lebanon's National News Agency reported, and Amnesty International said three Israeli strikes in March that killed 24 civilians, including 12 children, should be investigated as war crimes. [1] Trump formally notified Congress that hostilities with Iran had resumed on 7 July, and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said both chambers had voted to end the war. [1] The IMO's governing council condemned Iran's creation of an entity purporting to control traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and urged member states not to recognise Iran's claim of sovereignty over it. [1] The International Energy Agency said the effective closure of Hormuz had cut up to 14 million barrels a day of crude flows and that world oil demand was on track to fall in 2026 for the first time since 2020. [1] Trump wrote that Iran had asked to continue talks but that the ceasefire was 'OVER', which Iran's foreign ministry denied, and the US Treasury imposed its first new Iran sanctions since the 17 June memorandum.
