Confirmedon verified, dated visual or sensor evidence: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party, with visual or sensor evidence.
Satellite images reviewed by the Associated Press showed the Caroline Bezengi, carrying nearly 1 million barrels of crude, further submerged off Qibliyah Island, where it grounded after its crew reported an onboard explosion on 8 June, AP reported via WTOP. PAX researcher Wim Zwijnenburg put the sheen at nearly 800 sq km on 7 August, and Greenpeace Germany estimated about 600 sq km by 4 August. The area is part of Oman's Arabian Sea reserve, home to endangered petrels and the Arabian Sea humpback whale. The tanker is sanctioned by the UK and EU over Russian oil, and the cause of the explosion has not been disclosed.
