8 August 2026 in brief

Satellite images reviewed by the Associated Press showed the leaking sanctioned tanker Caroline Bezengi, carrying nearly 1 million barrels of crude, sinking deeper off Oman's Qibliyah Island, and a PAX researcher put the oil sheen at nearly 800 sq km. [1] Lebanon's National News Agency said Israeli forces entered Zawtar al-Gharbiya, a village held by the Lebanese army, and built an earthen barrier that an AFP correspondent saw; the account is disputed, as the Israeli military told AFP it was not aware of such an event. [1] The UAE foreign ministry said an Iranian missile hit an ADNOC tanker in the Strait of Hormuz with no casualties, an account that was not independently confirmed. [1] Iran's Supreme National Security Council said the strait would not open until the US corrected its behaviour, listing conditions including a permanent end to the war, the lifting of the naval blockade and all sanctions, and compensation, while IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said reopening was unrelated to the Iran-Oman talks.
